GABCON and North Rail Oy Sign MoU to Explore New Maputo–Gaborone Rail Corridor

GABCON recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with North Rail Oy to explore the feasibility of establishing a new rail corridor connecting the Port of Maputo in Mozambique with GABCON in Gaborone, Botswana.

The partnership marks an important step in GABCON’s efforts to diversify logistics routes, strengthen supply chain resilience, and provide customers with more efficient and reliable cargo transportation options across the SADC region.

Exploring the Maputo corridor presents an opportunity to identify an alternative gateway for Botswana. Furthermore, it could provide greater flexibility for customers, reduce dependence on existing corridors, and strengthen Botswana’s position within regional and international supply chains.

The initiative also supports GABCON’s strategic ambition to develop a leading regional container terminal hub that facilitates trade, promotes economic growth, and enhances connectivity across Botswana and the wider SADC region.

Through its collaboration with North Rail Oy, GABCON will leverage expertise in railway development and logistics planning while advancing broader regional objectives around trade facilitation, transport integration, and efficient multimodal logistics.

The signing of the MoU reflects a shared commitment to innovation, strategic collaboration, and future-ready logistics solutions. GABCON expresses its appreciation to the leadership and technical teams at North Rail Oy for their confidence and partnership.

GABCON and Amara Energy Company Sign MoU to Advance Botswana’s Energy and Logistics Infrastructure

GABCON and Amara Energy Company have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) marking an important step towards strengthening Botswana’s energy and logistics infrastructure.

The partnership will facilitate the development of a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage and distribution depot on land within the GABCON Terminal. The project which is at a feasibility study stage  will contribute to GABCON’s strategy to diversify its business, maximize the value of its assets, and identify new opportunities that contribute to national economic development.

Through the partnership, GABCON will put its existing land and infrastructure to productive use while expanding its role as an integrated logistics and infrastructure partner. The planned LPG depot is expected to enhance energy distribution capacity and support Botswana’s efforts to strengthen energy security and access to cleaner energy.

The investment is also anticipated to generate wider economic benefits through infrastructure development, job creation, skills transfer and increased private-sector participation. By strengthening logistics and distribution capabilities, the project will support Botswana’s ambition to position itself as a regional logistics and distribution hub.

For GABCON, the partnership demonstrates the potential of strategic collaboration to unlock new revenue streams, improve asset productivity and create sustainable value for the business, the economy and the communities it serves.

Mahalapye District Council Visit

As an inland port, GABCON plays a crucial role in facilitating access to international markets. Our customers rely on us to efficiently and safely import and export containerized cargo to and from various ports around the world in a cost-effective manner.

Mahalapye District Council extended an invitation to GABCON team to attend a full council meeting with the main objective of educating Honourable Councillors about GABCON’s services and their benefits. This was subsequent to a site visit to GABCON by Mahalapye District Council chairperson and his team. The delegation was to appreciate GABCON’s role in supporting the economy through provision of logistics solution.

It was imperative that District Councillors are  taken on board as  they serve as representatives of their communities, acting as a bridge between the people they serve and key stakeholders, including the private sector. They are also key drivers and advocates of local economic development.

This engagement served as both a sales and customer education initiative, providing an opportunity to reach a broader audience, foster interactive discussions, and enhance understanding of GABCON’s vital contribution to the national economy

Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative 2024 – Dibete Village

GABCON was in Dibete on 13th  December 2024 to hand over two bus shelters. This was in line with our Corporate Social Responsibility Policy, and it is an annual initiative targeting villages along the rail line.

Food hampers and Christmas gifts were also given to deserving members of the community targeting the elderly and school children.

In attendance were village elders, Kgosi Rre Lekgatlhanye Mabua, District Commissioner- Mahalapye, Mr. Ernest Phiri, honourable councillor Mr. Otsetswe Nthutang, Jindal Energy Liaison officer, Ms. Kopano Mphafe, representatives from various government departments, Dibete community and GABCON staff.

We were there, we interacted, had fun.. and made a difference!

Gabcon celebrates Botswana 58th Independence

As Botswana celebrated its 58th years of independence, we also paused to reflect on our performance; 2 years after our transition into a private company.

Our Managing Director’s message was brief and yet very clear, that as a company we are expected to maintain a high standard of performance as we strive to attain our vision of “being a leading integrated logistics provider and container hub in the region”.

A parting message from our SHEQ Officer was a reminder that  “safety begins with me”  as we travel during this very busy holiday.

Corporate Social Responsibility 2023

Gabcon held a Corporate Social Responsibility event in line with our CSR Policy. This year’s event which focused on Education at Primary level was in Morwa village. Gabcon donated laptops, desktops, and a printer to Our Lady of Carmel and Ramogotsi primary schools which are both located in the village. Donations were also made in the form of laptops for top achievers and were received by the Village Development Committee representative. These donations were towards improved computer literacy among children at primary level.

Food hampers were also made available to deserving members of the community.

World Aids Day 2023 Commemoration

Gabcon commemorated World Aids Day on the 1st December 2023. The theme for the year was “ Let Communities lead”.

Gabcon took this opportunity to re-commit to a healthy workforce and made this an eventful week with activities which focus on improved health. A mobile clinic was set up within Gabcon to provide various health related services.

Global Expo 2023

Gabcon participated at the Global Expo held in Gaborone, Botswana from the 11th to 14th October 2023. The theme for this year’s expo was “AFCFTA as a Springboard for improved Intra- Africa Trade”.

ACTFTA (African continental Free Trade Area) 

“The aim is to enable the free flow of goods and services across the continent and boost the trading position of Africa in the Global market by eliminating trade barriers and boost intra- Africa trade” – AFCFTA ( African continental Free Trade Area mandate)

Gabcon as an internationally recognized container terminal coupled with its strategic location plays a critical role in trade at both regional and international level. As a bonded facility, Gabcon has the potential to contribute significantly towards achievement of a free flow of goods in the region.

Gabcon was awarded the Rand Merchant Sustainability Award, having attained  position 2. This award was given to companies that demonstrated the ability to grow in harmony with the environment. Ms Baile Corrigan, Head of Global Markets presented the award.

Strategic Retreat

The Strategic retreat was  held in March 2017, at Jwaneng with representation from all company functions and levels.  We used that as an opportunity to step out of our daily routine to discuss needed adjustments to plans and other pivotal company issues. The company is also conscious of the need to empower local communities by hosting our within the country and across its geographical spread. All work and no play make Johnny a dull play; here at GABCON we don’t mind throwing in a bit of “FUN” to the mix to get the work done.
