GABCON recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with North Rail Oy to explore the feasibility of establishing a new rail corridor connecting the Port of Maputo in Mozambique with GABCON in Gaborone, Botswana.
The partnership marks an important step in GABCON’s efforts to diversify logistics routes, strengthen supply chain resilience, and provide customers with more efficient and reliable cargo transportation options across the SADC region.
Exploring the Maputo corridor presents an opportunity to identify an alternative gateway for Botswana. Furthermore, it could provide greater flexibility for customers, reduce dependence on existing corridors, and strengthen Botswana’s position within regional and international supply chains.
The initiative also supports GABCON’s strategic ambition to develop a leading regional container terminal hub that facilitates trade, promotes economic growth, and enhances connectivity across Botswana and the wider SADC region.
Through its collaboration with North Rail Oy, GABCON will leverage expertise in railway development and logistics planning while advancing broader regional objectives around trade facilitation, transport integration, and efficient multimodal logistics.
